Martial Arts v Self Defense System for a street fight?
I always wondered this. What’s the difference between a Martial Art vs a Self Defense System such as Krav Maga? Which would be more effective in a street fight?
Take all the hyped up training methods from a self defense system and apply them directly to a martial arts style. That’s what I’m doing and it works fantastically.
Hey, if Krav Maga is going to market itself as super awesome then I’m going to pay attention and take whatever of value they have and use it for my own purposes. What they have of value is training methods (not all of them, but a lot) and stress drills.
Personally I believe the more hype they get, the more openly they share their methods, the less effective they’re going to seem as everyone else incorporates what they are doing into their own training. I give them 5 to 8 years of a good run before they fade into the background and some other sensation hits the scene.
I predict Bunjikan, Bak Mei, or Kajukenbo will be the next big thing in 10 years. You heard it here first. I guarantee if an aspiring MMA fighter put 8 seriously dedicated years of training under a fully qualified teacher in either of those styles and then 2 years prepping for competition so you don’t immediately get disqualified then they will bust the scene wide open.
I say Bak Mei because I’m going to be agressively promoting it once I start teaching. I’ve noticed general knowledge of the style has been increasing over the past decade.
