Muay Thai Culture

Over the years, as interest in Muay Thai has grown, a sub-culture revolving around Muay Thai and Thai culture has developed. Other cultures have had a similar draw such as the Japanese culture, all around the world you will find people enamored with anime, the samurai, sushi, and Japanese etiquette. Many people go to great lengths to learn Japanese and would like nothing more than to move to Japan. Such is the case with Thai culture and much of this interest in Thai culture is directly linked to the rise in popularity of Muay Thai throughout the world. Many people go to Thailand to train Muay Thai and end up not only improving their Muay Thai technique but falling in love with the culture of Thailand. It is very common for one to get a traditional Thai tattoo on their Muay Thai training trip as a permanent reminder of their experiences in Thai culture.

And so along with the growing interest in Muay Thai and Thai culture we have seen a growing number of apparel and brands that use Thai cultural symbols in their artwork. Thai script, elephants, characters from Thai folk tales and religious imagery is commonly used with Muay Thai equipment and apparel. Muay Thai fighters relative to many other popular combat sports in the world of MMA are depicted in the light of ancient warriors, and mongkols, prajits, traditional hemp rope hand bindings, traditional thai shorts are often used in connection with images of the Nak Muay or Thai boxer. Scenes from the Wai Kru are often depicted on shirts and there is a nostalgia regarding the ancient art of Muay Boran for much of the Muay Thai community.

We here at Somchai Muay Thai understand the Muay Thai community’s appreciation for Thai culture and will constantly strive to bring you beautiful images that capture the viewer’s imagination as well as tell the story of a Nak Muay amongst Nak Muays, Somchai.

We will continue to bring you beautiful artwork depicting Muay Thai scenes from the past to the present. From the battlefields of Burma in the time of the Ayutthaya Kingdom to the gritty Bangkok gyms and rural camps of Isaan, we will impart the blood, sweat and tears that Nak Muay’s throughout the ages have put in for Muay Thai through the story of Somchai.
