Dinner for Schmucks
Release: In Theaters
A publisher coerces his friends to invite some bizarre guests to their dinner party but might not be prepared for Carell in this comedy. I’m more of a drama/horror fan but every once in a while a movie like this will pop up and I can’t help but check it out. Besides, Steve Carell is absolutely hilarious! Variety calls Dinner for Schmucks, “An uproarious odd-couple remake of Francis Veber’s hit French farce “The Dinner Game.” Critics seem positive about this film with very few stating that some of the scenes are drawn out. The good news is that it doesn’t seem like they chose only best scenes for the trailer, as there are many more surprise laughs throughout the movie.
The Oxford Murders
Release: August 6th
An elderly woman is murdered and a student and a professor find her body. Hers is the first of a line of bizarre murders. The killer leaves clues behind while grad student and professor attempt to put this puzzle together to discover the killer’s identity. Elijah Wood plays the role of the student who starts to become consumed by the whole situation. This flick seems to follow along the lines of the movie Seven starring Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman. I hope I’m wrong, but I think I can guess who the serial killer is without watching or reading any more about it. Let’s hope to be surprised with this new film directed by Alex de la Iglesia. Previous movies made by some of the ten producers involved with this film are Transsiberian, Brideshead Revisited, The Orphanage and El Crimen Perfecto (The Perfect Crime).
The Other Guys
Release: August 6th
An unlikely pair of actors team up for this action-comedy. Mark Wahlberg is a detective who makes a mistake during an investigation and is paired up with his partner (Will Ferrell) in return. Ferrell’s character would rather do office work than be out on the streets fighting crime and when he and his partner get to work they simply cause a ruckus everywhere they go. This is an unusual role for Wahlberg but the trailer seems to be convincing the general public that Markie Mark might be able to pull it off. He was on the local Boston news last night with his family while they were visiting his brother’s restaurant. His mother and brother both told the press how Wahlberg would make them laugh all the time when he was a kid and that he’s capable of acting in a successful comedy.
Eat, Pray, Love
Release: August 13th
Just the preview to this film makes me want to read the book (which I heard is fabulous). Julia Roberts plays Elizabeth Gilbert in this true story adapted from the book of the same title. Elizabeth travels around the world on her own to discover her true self. This has to be everyone’s fantasy and now we can live vicariously through her experiences.
Julia Roberts needed to gain weight quickly for this role and told the press that she would down 8-10 pieces of pizza before filming began at about 8:30 a.m. each morning. Not that I’m in favor of rapid weight gain or loss, but Julia needed was looking anorexic before making this movie so I don’t think the added weight creates a big problem for her appearance. She looks healthier now and I’m sure she will deliver an impeccable performance. I’ll be going to the theater alone this time for the full effect!
The Expendables
Release: August 13th
Got Beef? Here is a movie that most people will watch for the cast alone. What an interesting variety of stars in this film, and I’m not necessarily talking about acting ability, but the combination of stars involved and their history. The Expendables cast includes Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham (Crank), Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Eric Roberts (The Dark Knight), Randy Couture (Ultimate Fighter, acted in Invincible and Redbelt), Stone Cold Steve Austin, Giselle Itié (Spanish novella Bella la Fea), David Zayas (Dexter), Charisma Carpenter (Baywatch), Gary Daniels (mixed Martial arts, American Streetfighter), Terry Crews (former NFL player, Terminator Salvation) and Mickey Rourke. This movie looks like it might have a plot and will include many favorite action stars as well as those who are famous for their skill in mixed martial arts, wrestling, football and…well… being pretty.
Vampires Suck
Release: August 18th
This movie is basically a comical jab at teen dramas and the famous Twilight series. All of the events in this film ultimately lead up to prom night. Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer directed the film and you may know them by their work on Disaster Movie, Meet the Spartans and Epic Movie. Those of you who are sick of seeing and hearing about the Twilight movies and the characters involved will get a kick out of this film.
Lottery Ticket
Release: August 20th
Kevin Carson (Bow Wow) lives with his mother (Loretta Divine) in the projects and discovers that they won the lottery. Kevin Carson goes to cash the ticket but the lottery commission was closed for the weekend. Now he needs to hold on to the ticket for dear life. The word gets out in the neighborhood and he becomes a local celebrity who is suddenly lucky at love but also in danger of getting mugged or worse!
Piranha 3D
Release: August 20
This sounds cheesy but I have to watch it! Who doesn’t want to watch a 3D film with man-eating piranhas swimming at you face? I’m sure this will be one of those films where people ridiculously put themselves in harm’s way simply to get them into the water so the piranhas can chew their legs off. Acting doesn’t matter as much to me when 3D gore is involved. This film was directed by Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes 2006, High Tension 2005).
The Switch
Release: August 20
Why does Jennifer Aniston always choose to be in this type of movie? I want to see her do something completely off the beaten path and be a bad girl for once! This film also stars Jason Bateman who plays her best friend. She decides that it’s time to have a baby and is determined to do it on her own, though she does require the assistance of a sperm donor. She has the baby and years later finds out that the biological baby-daddy may not be who she thinks he is. As far as Aniston movies go, I suppose it looks okay.
The Last Exorcism
Release: August 27
Now…THIS is what I’m talking about. Other movies are being released on the 27th but this one seems like the most interesting which is why I ended this list with my top pick for the month. Eli Roth (writer, producer and director of Cabin Fever and Hostel) produced The Last Exorcism. The directors of this film are fairly new to the game and will either make or break the film. The same goes for the actors as some of them have only had appearances on TV. Something tells me that this movie can’t be bad if it has anything to do with the twisted mind of Eli Roth. It’s shot documentary style like Paranormal Activity and The Blair Witch Project adding a realistic effect for the audience.
