Academy Of Martial Arts

Martial Arts Academy Question.?
Every academy i go to says the other one is bad. i cant seem to decide which ones are good and which ones are just after my money.
I went to one once and the man had a BIG ego and always said “I’ll only show you once” and then once he shouted “Hit me B**** Hit me” and I was only about a week into it. It sounds petty but it made me want to cry…anyways i left after that.
Can someone please give me pointer of what to look for in a good academy?
The size chould the classes be?
What I should expect from the trainer(s)?
Thank you
I want to do it properly, not just for fun or for exercise. Also i’m 19 years old. Is that too old to start and get good?
I have students as young as 65 at my school. Your age has nothing to do with it….
Things to look for in a gym:
1. Meet the instructor and interview him/her as if you were conducting a job interview. (In essence you are…) The instructor should never be boastful and should never bad mouth another style. Those that do are usually running a commercial school and are only in it for the money- not the student.
2. Drop in and watch some of the classes both by appointment and spontaneously. (That way you don’t always get the dog and pony show)
3. Speak with some of the students at the school and get their take on the school.
4. Take a class or two and see how the classes feel.
5. No teacher that wants to keep students in this day and age will be abuse in laguage or manner to their students. (Don’t take it… and report it to the BBB)
6. If you like the atmosphere of the school and the instructors teaching methods and learning environment that the teacher inspires then you might be happy at that gym.
I try to inspire a family atmosphere in my school and I keep my classes down to a minimum of 10-16 students. I do a lot of classes but I do not feel that I can give the students the attention they need if I can not see them performing skills.
I sincerly hope this helps.
